🗝️ Registry Honey Keys
Fake creds in well-known registry locations (VNC, WinSCP, PuTTY).
What it is
Plant fake registry entries in well-known credential locations (e.g., HKLM\SOFTWARE\RealVNC, HKCU\Software\Martin Prikryl\WinSCP) containing honey credentials. Attacker enumeration tools (LaZagne, SessionGopher) automatically harvest these.
Implementation requirements
- Registry write access on target endpoints
- Fake entries matching known credential storage patterns (VNC, PuTTY, WinSCP, FileZilla)
- EDR integration: Monitor registry read events on honey keys (Sysmon Event ID 13)
- Honey credentials must route to DOAR-controlled infrastructure when used
- Rollback: Delete the registry values from every host and revoke the credentials they hold.
- Upkeep: Keep values in the format the imitated software currently uses. Monthly proof-of-life read from a test process.
